Scientific Workshop on Local Environmental Phenomena and Non-Local Mathematical Models

Abstract of the event theme

This scientific workshop first tackles the environmental science theme of whether it is possible to construct a mathematical model of moisture dynamics over an entire domain of continuous soil from soil moisture data observed at a limited number of spatiotemporal points. The resulting model will be significantly different from Darcy’s law-based existing models. Meanwhile, analysis of such a new mathematical model will provide a new perspective for understanding soil moisture dynamics, specifically an evaluation method based on the Fourier transform. Furthermore, it will dramatically advance research on other topics such as surface flows modeled with singular hyperbolic partial differential equations and the dynamics of tactic organism populations. The above has academic significance in that it poses new mathematical problems, and social significance in that it provides new insights into the design, maintenance, and management of social infrastructure, as well as the conservation of biological ecosystems.
