Abstract of the event theme

A(r)tmosphere: The Convergence of Art and Atmosphere
The concept of a(r)tmosphere emerges as a fusion of art and atmosphere, presenting a framework that bridges the sensory, relational, and creative dimensions of experience. Rooted in the themes of the conference, the a(r)tmosphere is not merely a physical or environmental condition but an active, dynamic interplay where artistic expression and philosophical reflection coalesce to interrogate and redefine our understanding of the world.

Micro-ontology is a philosophical approach that examines the fundamental structures of being on a small scale, focusing on the relational and mediating dimensions of existence rather than the grand, overarching systems often emphasized in traditional ontology. Coined and elaborated by thinkers such as Emanuele Coccia, micro-ontology shifts attention away from static, self-contained entities to the dynamic and interconnected processes that define how things exist and relate to one another. The “micro” in micro-ontology denotes a focus on the minute, ephemeral, and often overlooked dimensions of existence. It considers how these small-scale phenomena—such as a reflection in a mirror, an image, or a scent—contribute to larger ontological frameworks.

Reading the a(r)tmosphere in terms of micro-ontology
The expression ‘空気を読む’ is often used in Japan to convey the idea of ‘understanding the situation without words’ or ‘sensing someone’s feelings.’ A literal translation, ‘reading the air’ or ‘reading the atmosphere,’ also resonates, offering a profound metaphor for the subtle dynamics that underlie artistic and philosophical inquiry. This concept highlights the critical importance of engaging with context before addressing any issue, as well as understanding the intricate relationships that shape all forms of dialogue. Without interrogating the underlying tensions, linguistic nuances, and varying perspectives that frame our challenges, we risk reinforcing narrow, exclusionary discourses.
Through a micro-ontological lens, atmosphere becomes a space where the interplay of subtle tensions, nuanced expressions, and diverse perspectives shapes the conditions for meaningful dialogue.

This event seeks to place the atmosphere—both literal and metaphorical—at the center of reflection, deconstructing overused categories and reimagining the epistemic and creative horizons that link art and philosophy. It represents an initial step toward confronting contemporary challenges through a reconsideration of emerging relational forms in the 21st century. By leveraging the unique contributions of art and philosophy, the event creates a space for interdisciplinary dialogue, focusing on the resources these fields bring to reframe complex issues.
In this context, the atmosphere becomes a focal point in a performative cultural laboratory, where we will explore it through the interplay of artistic practices, media, and critical theory. This multifaceted approach enables us to address key questions through the lens of micro-ontology:

  1. How can the concept of a(r)tmosphere, reimagined through micro-ontological inquiry and artistic practices, reveal the intricate relational networks that shape our perception and experience of space?
  2. How are atmospheres in our shared spaces constructed and differentiated at a micro-ontological level? Which artistic methods or interdisciplinary perspectives—spanning sensory experiences, technological mediations, and cultural expressions—can contribute to rethinking atmosphere as a dynamic and participatory medium?
  3. How can philosophy inquire into these micro-ontological atmospheres? How can art represent/construct them?
