Scientific Workshop on Local Environmental Phenomena and Non-Local Mathematical Models
November 20th – December 04th, 2025

The group, including two mathematicians invited from Algeria, engages in two weeks of brainstorming through discussions and experiments, attempting to bring environmental science and mathematics closer together. Specifically, we will demonstrate the high utility of differential equations, which possess a property known as non-locality, in addressing various environmental science issues involving the essential constraints of observational data and the interaction between biological and physical phenomena.

Understanding real-world phenomena through mathematical models is essential and effective in local environmental sciences, particularly in water resources engineering. However, clinging to classical dogma and blind faith in AI and off-the-shelf software has resulted in a lack of methodological innovation in tandem with advances in mathematics. Meanwhile, even among mathematicians, there is a lack of understanding of the real-world implications of mathematical knowledge, which has great potential for application.
